This one goes out to all the ladies who love a guy in uniform.
Who can forget Tom Cruise as the young Naval aviator in the 1986 hit, “Top Gun?” Did you know there are over 25,000 films made about the military? At least! (No one knows the total count, but that’s close). Out of all of those movies- some classic, some not so much, we started to wonder, “What are the favorites of female fans?”
Here are a few we found. Post your favorites in the comments section below.
PRIVATE BENJAMIN- Goldie Hawn’s classic 1980 fish-out-of-water comedy. The film was one of that year’s biggest box office hits and was even turned into a short-lived TV series. In the movie, Judy Benjamin (GOLDIE HAWN) is an American woman who joins the U.S. Army after her new husband dies on their wedding night during sex. Duped by a sneaky recruiting sergeant, Jim Ballard (HARRY DEAN STANTON), who lets her believe military life to be more glamorous than it is, she has a rude awakening in boot camp. After getting in trouble constantly, Judy wants to quit but chooses to stick it out, and has a series of adventures which eventually lead to promotion.
GLORY- Women all over the world still swoon over DENZEL WASHINGTON in his Academy Award winning portrayal of Trip in this 1987 military movie depicting the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. The story is based on the 54th MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY, the first formal unit of the US Army to be made up entirely of African American men.
AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN- arguably the favorite female pick of all time, RICHARD GERE stars as Zack Mayo in this 1982 coming-of-age romance. Set against the backdrop of basic training, Mayo goes up against a fierce nemesis, his head drill instructor United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley (Best Supporting Academy Award winning actor LOUIS GOSSETT, JR.). But it’s his romance with local factory worker Paula Pokrifki (DEBRA WINGER) that gives this movie its heart and soul- not to mention one of the great movie love songs of all time, the Academy Award winning “Up Where We Belong.” It was the third highest grossing film of 1982 and still holds a place in every romantic heart- male and female.
Tom Cruise stars at the unstoppable force, Jack Reacher.
On December 21, 2012, Tom will star as JACK REACHER, a former Army Military Police officer in the highly anticipated action-adventure film, “JACK REACHER.” It’s another role in his long line of portraying a few great men (pun intended!) in such classics as “BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY,” “VALKYRIE,” and of course, ”A FEW GOOD MEN” and ”TOP GUN.”
