With just a few weeks left before the December 16, 2011 premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ in IMAX theaters, we continue with our ongoing series of ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ cast bios with a profile of Bollywood star, Anil Kapoor. Best known to U.S. audiences for his roles as the game show host in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘President Omar Hassan’ in the hit television series, ’24.’
A native of Mumbai, Anil was first exposed to the Indian film community as a child when his father, Surinder Kappor, changed careers from agent to film producer. Since then, Anil has appeared in more than 150 films, landing his first role at the age of 19.
During a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Ail has been honored with four FilmFare Awards and a prestigious National Film Award for his role in the film ‘Pukar.’ Anil also won a Screen Actors Guild award for his performance in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning movie, ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’
Anil is also very involved in humanitarian efforts, including working toward the reconstruction of schools in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir after India’s devastating earthquakes and hosting the first-ever fundraiser for Children’s Right to Education in 2007. He has also served as an ambassador for Plan India and participated in several world concert tours for Indian settlers abroad.
In fact, Anil donated his ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ salary to the production’s otherwise destitute Mumbai-based child actors to help pay for their education and give them a chance to escape the real-life slums. He went on to lead the ‘Learn Without Fear’ campaign to prevent violence against children in schools in 2008 and along with his ‘Slumdog’ peers; Anil initiated a signature campaign to prevent the exploitation and abuse of children in 2009.
Along with several other celebrity humanitarians, including Demi Moore, Peter Gabriel and Ricky Martin, Anil serves as an ambassador for CNN’s Freedom Project to draw awareness to modern-day slavery and he had joined Bill Gates and Desmond Tutu to support the International Rotary’s campaign to end polio.
In addition to his humanitarian work and successful acting career, Anil has produced over 30 films through his family-owned production houses, including ‘Gandhi, My Father,’ based on the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his eldest son, Harilal, which won three Special Jury National Awards in 2007.
In 2011, Anil returns to the big screen in the successful ‘Mission: Impossible’ film franchise and he recently told NDTV, “I am very happy and excited that I got the opportunity to interact, meet and develop a great, great relationship, a friendship, with the entire team of ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.’” You can find out what else Anil had to say about the film here.
