‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Cast Bios: Simon Pegg Returns As ‘Benji Dunn’

As the excitement builds for the December 16, 2011 IMAX premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,’ the TomCruise.com team is eager to introduce you to the new cast members of ‘Ghost Protocol’ as well as reacquaint you with returning cast members with our ongoing series of actor bios. Directed by Brad Bird, the all-star cast features Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Josh Holloway, Anil Kappor and Léa Seydoux.

Tom (‘Ethan Hunt’) and Simon are reunited for the fourth installment of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series, so we continue our ongoing series of cast bios with a profile of everyone’s favorite supergeek, Simon Pegg as ‘Benji Dunn.’

From the high-speed action of ‘Mission: Impossible III’ to the bridge of the ‘Starship Enterprise’ (J.J. Abram’s ‘Star Trek’), the actor, writer and Si-Fi aficionado has made a career “to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

Simon Pegg was born in Gloucester, England. After studying English Literature and Performance Studies at Stratford Upon Avon College, the affable comedian went on to study drama at the University of Bristol.

In 1993, Simon moved to London to try to launch a career as a stand-up comedian but had better luck in television, appearing in several TV comedies, such as ‘Asylum’ and ‘Six Pairs of Pants.’ From 1998 through 2004, Simon was regularly featured on ‘The 99p Challenge’ on BBC Radio 4. In 1999, Simon created and co-wrote, along with his best friend, Nick Frost, the television sitcom, ‘Spaced.’

Nominated for a British Comedy Award as Best Male Comedy Newcomer for his role as ‘Tim Bisley,’ the multi-talented Brit continued to star in the cult television series, ‘Spaced’ for two seasons before moving on to the big screen as ‘Shaun’ in ‘Shaun of the Dead.’ Named one of the best British comedies ever made by ‘Empire Magazine,’ Simon not only starred in ‘Shaun of the Dead’ but he and co-writer, Edgar Wright, won a British Independent Film Awards Best Screenplay for the film.

Combining his friendships with a love of action and zombie films, the Simon and Edgar Wright reunited to co-write, ‘Hot Fuzz,’ starring Simon and Nick Frost. Nick and Simon then joined forces again to co-write and co-star in the alien buddy comedy, ‘Paul’ which also starred Seth Rogan, Kristin Wiig and Sigourney Weaver.

Fun fact: Both of Simon’s parents, Gillian Rosemary (née Smith) and John Henry Beckingham as well as his sister briefly appeared in ‘Spaced.’ His mother also appeared in ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz.’

Gearing up for the premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,’ Simon told ScreenCrave.com that he views this film as a “rebirth for the series“ because “I feel like it’s a reinvigoration of this particular story. It was a series when it was on TV, so it’s a story that can have so many iterations. There are so many adventures to get into with this team of impossible mission fighters.”

Simon apparently had a great time hanging out with Tom again, even playing some pranks on director, Brad Bird on the “M:I’ set. In fact, he was totally psyched to work with everyone on ‘Ghost Protocol’ and you can hear his enthusiasm as he talks to Access Hollywood in the video below….

Simon joined director Brad Bird and his co-stars in Dubai as Tom discussed the origin of the ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ film title in October 2010 and as an avid Tweeter, Simon (@simonpegg) has been sharing his ‘Misson: Impossible’ experiences with fans….

We can’t wait to see what gadgets ‘Benji’ comes up with in ‘Ghost Protocol’ and it appears ‘Empire’ magazine is excited too, profiling the film in the December 2011 issue.

As we learn in the ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ trailer, the IMF team has been blamed for a bombing at the Kremlin and in order to clear their names, the team must go rogue. ‘Benji Dunn’ does what he does best, hooking the IMF team up with some amazing gadgets but as he warns ‘Ethan Hunt’ (Tom Cruise), you have to be very careful with some of his tech tools because “red means dead.”

In addition to ‘Ghost Protocol,’ Simon will appear as ‘Inspector Thompson’ in ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ and is attached to the ‘Star Trek’ movie sequel, once again playing the iconic engineer, ‘Scotty.’

Whether he is teaching us how to ‘How to Lose Friends & Alienate People’ alongside Kirsten Dunst and Jeff Bridges or is voicing animated characters such as ‘Reepicheep’ in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ and ’Buck’ in ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,’ we love Simon Pegg!

So you can imagine how excited we are to see super spy ‘Ethan Hunt’ (Tom Cruise) and his techie sidekick, ‘Benji Dunn’ (Simon Pegg) reunited in the latest installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series, ‘Ghost Protocol!’ The film will be released nationwide on December 21, 2011.
