When ‘Rock of Ages’ director, Adam Shankman invited fans to head to the Sun Life Stadium in Southern Florida to appear as movie extras during a live concert performed by Tom Cruise and the cast of ‘Rock of Ages’ on July 18th, we knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime!
Just a few days before the concert, Tom Cruise and Adam Shankman talked to Ryan Seacrest about the ‘Rock of Ages’ movie and the live event. During the KIIS radio show, “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” Adam repeated his invitation to fans to join the ‘ROA’ cast for a live concert scene for the movie and Tom revealed that he sings Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar” and Bon Jovi “Dead or Alive” in the film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, which also stars Julianne Hough (@JulianneHough), Alec Baldwin (@AlecBaldwin), Russell Brand (@RustyRockets), Mary J. Blige (@MaryJBlige), Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Diego Boneta (@DiegoBoneta).
The TomCruise.com team was totally pumped for the ‘Rock of Ages’ live concert and when we asked you to tell us all about your experience as a movie extra, you rocked our world!
Miami resident, Timothy Sternberg (@TimWSternberg), was the FIRST to respond and we were so exited to read his blog that we just had to share it!
My wife Erika and I had the most amazing time today as extras on the set of “Rock of Ages.”
We first drove over to Sun Life Stadium, where after a brief security screening, we were put on school buses for a short ride over to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. The filming took place today at the Hard Rock Live venue. We arrived and were escorted to our seats as we watched the initial filming of a scene with Tom Cruise.
Then all of the extras were escorted over to the floor of the arena where we rocked out with Tom Cruise as Stacee Jax, Julianne Hough (from ‘Dancing with the Stars’) and Diego Boneta (from ‘90210’) as they did the song ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’
In between shots, we were directed by Adam Shankman and his team. After several takes they broke for lunch and when they returned it was back in audience mode for ‘Wanted, Dead or Alive.’ After each shot of this song they set off the most amazing pyrotechnic effect that caused so much smoke that they had to evacuate the arena. Trust me it looks awesome!
As the day went on they gave away prizes such as iPads, iTouches, Nanos, Shuffles and two cast-autographed Fender guitars. We did not score any prizes but Erika did get an Arsenal/’Rock of Ages’ t-shirt. We also got bags of sugary snacks, which I avoided like the plague. I did drink the bottled water they gave us.
At the end of shooting as a BONUS, Tom Cruise and the band performed the song, ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ just for the audience! The dude can actually sing! I was surprised but Tom rocks out the songs!
After a long day, we were taken back to Sun Life Stadium via school bus. It was the most AMAZING, ROCKING day. Now with any luck, next July you may catch Erika and I on screen for one brief moment. Maybe, just maybe! Either way we can say that we were a part of the movie, ‘Rock of Ages!’
Thanks so much, Timothy, for reaching out and sharing your experience with us! To show our appreciation, the TomCruise.com team is sending you & your wife to the movie of your choice. Enjoy!
