“This thing is insane! The singing is out of control” –Adam Shankman
Adam Shankman, the director of the film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, ‘Rock of Ages,’ tried to convey his excitement about working with Tom Cruise and the ‘ROA’ cast during an interview on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS radio show, “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” this morning.
Calling in from the Miami set of ‘Rock of Ages,’ the director was surrounded by the all-star cast, including Tom Cruise. Adam teased fans with the information that they’ve been spending the past couple of days shooting scenes of Tom Cruise (as Stacee Jaxx) swinging from a pole while singing “Rock Me Like a Hurricane” with Julianne Hough (@JulianneHough),!
Adam then passed the phone off to Tom, who laughingly told Seacrest about the pole dancing, “I don’t know how to explain, I think you gotta see it.”
Always ready to tackle new challenges, Tom discussed his motivation play a rock star with Ryan, “I like trying different things and different genres, and I love movies, so this an opportunity. I remember I said to Adam (Shankman) a couple of years ago after I saw “Hairspray,” I said, ‘Okay man, where’s our musical?’

During this morning’s interview, Tom also revealed several ‘80s classics he’ll be singing in ‘Rock of Ages.’ Excited about his role as Stacee Jaxx, Tom told Ryan Seacrest, “I’ve never done a musical, and I’m having a blast. Learning a lot. I’ve always loved music. There’s nothing like trying to do something yourself to give you an even greater appreciation for what this art form is and it’s fantastic. I love this character, and working with Adam (Shankman) and the cast, and everyone. They’re just outstanding across the board.”
“Oh my God, that’s Tom Cruise!”
Ryan Seacrest wasn’t the only one exclaiming “Oh my God, that’s Tom Cruise!” over the photo of Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, the entertainment world was buzzing when the TomCruise.com team first revealed the shirtless, tattooed picture of Tom rocking out as Stacee Jaxx on June 17, 2011. (BTW, the iconic image of Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx in ‘Rock of Ages’ Wallpaper is now available exclusively on TomCruise.com.)
Although he has been in the recording studio, Tom mentioned he isn’t ready to drop an album just yet. Keeping his focus on the film Tom said, “Right now all I’m thinking about is just getting through this scene. We’ve just got great people across the board, working with people like Adam Anders who is producing music and he id music “Glee” and he’s just incredible, and Mia Michaels (‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judge and choreographer). Adam has assembled an incredible team.”
Surrounded by an all-star cast, including Alec Baldwin (@AlecBaldwin), Russell Brand (@rustyrockets), Mary J. Blige (@MaryJBlige), Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Diego Boneta (@DiegoBoneta), Tom has been particularly impressed by “the lovely” Julianne Hough, who plays Sherrie Christian. Tom enthusiastically told Ryan Seacrest, “She’s an enormously talented lady. A great actress and obviously everyone knows her dance skills but you just see as an actress how she’s creating this character and really killing it!” And Julianne has been equally impressed by Tom, telling AccessHollywood.com in a recent interview, “’Commitment’ does not sum up the whole Tom Cruise-ness. It’s all Stacee Jaxx, the character. He’s unbelievable.”
Tom encouraged fans in the Fort Lauderdale area to come out to the Sun Life Stadium this Monday, “It’s going to be a lot of fun.” Fans will be able to the ‘ROA’ characters, the music, and a live performance. Tom provided more event details, “It’s a concert scene that we shoot on Monday. It’s “Dead or Alive” and it goes into where Stacee Jaxx is performing in a stadium.”
Fans 16 and older are invited to get out their best ‘80s outfit and rock out as movie extras as the all-star ‘Rock of Ages’ cast performs live for the concert scene.
