Tom Cruise is returning to the big screen as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible IV, which leads us to wonder who might be considered to co-star alongside Cruise as the next villain of the franchise.

The Mission: Impossible movies have always had undeniably nefarious villains, each more evil than the last, who all stand between Ethan Hunt and his task to accomplish whatever mission he must carry out. With the news that Cruise is starring in the fourth Mission: Impossible (which he is executive producing himself and with Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams), we decided to take a look at the past three villains who we love to hate:

Mission: Impossible: Jon Voight

jon-voight

Jon Voight came to prominence in the film Midnight Cowboy, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, and has starred in memorable roles in films such as Deliverance, Heat, Coming Home, and Ali. In the first Mission, Voight plays Jim Phelps, who leads the Impossible MIssions Force (IMF) team. When a mission goes terribly awry, killing everyone including Phelps, Hunt learns that it was set up to draw out a mole named “Job.” Hunt looks suspicious as the only surviving members, and escapes the city to form his own team of agents to seek out Job. Discovering Phelps is alive, Hunt realizes that Phelps is Job, and must race to uncover him as the real mole.

Mission: Impossible II: Dougray Scott

Scottish actor Dougray Scott has appeared in a variety of television shows and movies, including Ever After, The World is Not Enough, and Desperate Housewives. In the second film of the franchise, Hunt’s mission is to track down and stop Scott’s character Sean Ambrose from spreading a deadly virus known as Chimera, which he has stolen in order to make billions.

Mission: Impossible III: Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman has garnered accolades for his supporting and lead roles in films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Cold Mountain, and Capote, for which he won an Academy Award. In the most recent movie, Hoffman plays arms dealer Owen Davien, who threatens to kill Hunt’s new wife if he does not retrieve and hand over the “Rabbit’s Foot” to Davien within 48 hours.

Much like when we wanted to know your opinion on who should star as the next Mission: Impossible leading lady and who should sit in the director’s chair, we’d like to know who YOU think would portray the greatest antagonist to Hunt in the next M:I installment.

Should you choose to accept this mission, which actor do you think has the chops to stand up to Cruise’s Hunt character? Tell us on Twitter, on our Facebook fan page, or here on the Official Tom Cruise Blog! Sound off in the comments below!

There can be only one MI4 Baddie: Adrian Paul

  • janice davis

Julian McMahon has my vote for the villian…..lol is there a limit to how many times I can post my suggestion???

    Janice Davis

  • Bernhard

    What about Peter Wingfield?
He’s already participated in big movie productions (like X-men 2) and he does the ‘baddie’ really well – just check out his performance in 24 (Day 7)!

  • Rose

    Adrian Paul…The Highlander

  • http://MyGlobalB2B.com Charlie

Seal has the charisma to be a good villian…

  • Joanna Lewis

I think the best actor to be your bad guy would be Adrian Paul from the Highlander TV show from a number of years ago. He plays evil so incredibly well.

    Thanks.

    Joanna

  • Cindy Western

I think that Adrian Paul of the TV series “The Highlander” should be the next villain in MI4. I also think that the famous catch-phrase from the franchise could be slid in the dialog at the point where Tom’s character doles out his justice,”There can be only one.” That to me would be epic since it was always Adrian’s alter ego that would use it just before lopping off the weekly villain’s head. Another reason I suggest Adrian Paul is b/c I would actually go to the movies to see him on the big screen and believe me that is saying a lot since the last movie I’ve paid to see in the theater was “The Passion of the Christ.”

the answer to the quiz is:

Davian’s Translator played by Bahar Soomekh

  • Sarah German

Bahar Soomekh who was Davian’s security guard from Vatican City.

  • Brian

The woman who was executed was Davian’s head of security, though she is credited as Davian’s translator in the end credits. The part was played by Bahar Soomekh in the film. She was executed because Davian felt that she failed him.

  • Rebecca MacBride

The real woman killed by Owen Davien is his own security guard who failed him at Vatican City. Not Julia, Ethan’s wife. The woman is wearing a mask that makes her appear to be Julia. Great tension in that scene.

    Rebecca MacBride

  • Christiana Naziris

    Davian’s Translator.

  • Daniel Hamby

Answer: the person actually killed was Owen’s translator, actress Bahar Soomekh. She “failed” him earlier in the film and execution was her punishment.

As for the villain, I feel one of these actors would do well: Christian Bale, James Gandolfini, or Ed Norton. All three have played terrific villains in the past, and all three are fabulous actors.

Director: if you guys aren’t bringing Abrams back (who did awesome) I think Michael Mann would do great. Tom Cruise and Mike Mann worked well together before, and Mann loves crime drama stuff.

Also, if you guys need any help I would love to work as a production assistant of any kind. Direct me to the proper place to sign up.

  • Terry Becker

The person killed was actually Owen Davian’s Translator and not Julia.

  • http://twitter.com/missxvampire Catalina Flores

“Who was actually executed, and what specific role do they play in Davien’s organization?”

The person who was executed was one of Davian’s people. She wore a mask to deceive Ethan, making him believe that Julia was killed.

Davian used Julia as a bait to force Ethan to steal the ‘rabbit’s foot’

    JACK NICHOLSON

  • Tony Berka

Hi, Not sure if I put my trivia answer in the right place so here it is again:
Ethan Hunt thought Julia was murdered by Davien, but it was really Davien’s interpreter who was wearing Julia’s mask.

I would love to see John Travolta as the bad guy. Tom and John would light up the screen like never before and create an un-forgettable performance. At some point Tom and John must create a movie together as that combination in my view can’t be left un-done in the annals of movie history. Now is the perfect time and Mission Impossible IV is the perfect set!

  • http://www.karencantwell.com Karen Cantwell

For the contest: Davian’s translator played by Bahar Soomekh.

Who would I like to see as the next MI villain? Meryl Streep. A woman can play a villain, right?

  • Isaca Collins

The woman that was executed was Davian’s head of security who had failed him when he was kidnapped out of the bathroom by Hunt and his team!

  • Amy

The real person to get executed was Davian’s translator.

  • Paul Villamil

I typed the wrong email address in the previous comment
The answer is Davien kills his translator from the Vatican City debacle probably for failing him!

I would like to see Christopher Walken as the next villain against Tom Cruise

    Cheers,
    Huge fan

  • http://www.websitesinaflash.com Ashton Sanders

She was actually Davien’s Translator in Rome where Hunt switched places with Davien. Since she failed Davien (by not realizing that it wasn’t Davien), he killed her.

In Mission: Impossible III, Ethan Hunt believes his fiancé Julia has been executed before his eyes by the ruthless arms dealer Owen Davien. Yet Hunts discovers that the person executed was only disguised as Julia. Actually who was executed was one of Davien’s employees, whose specific role she played in Davien’s organization was to assist him at the Vatican and translate for him.

Also I would like to see Christian Bale as the next villain Cruise’s character takes on in the upcoming Mission: Impossible IV movie.

  • Sriram

Q: In Mission: Impossible III, Ethan Hunt believes his fiancé Julia has been executed before his eyes by the ruthless arms dealer Owen Davien. Yet Hunt discovers that the person executed was only disguised as Julia. Who was actually executed, and what specific role do they play in Davien’s organization?

A : The person executed as Julia (disguised) was Davian’s Translator played by Bahar Soomekh in the movie. she was made to wear the mask by Davian to make sure that Ethan Hunt tells about the real Rabbit Foot to protect his wife from getiing killed. The scene involved is Ethan Hunt is being taken to a place where his wife Julia is being kept in custody by Davian threatening to kill her if Ethan hunt did not bring the Rabbit Foot. The killiing of a girl disguised as Julia happens here.

  • Megan King

The lady that was executed in Mission Impossible 3 as Hunts girlfriend was Bahar Soomekh and she played Davian’s translator. This is such a great movie! I cannot wait until MI IV comes out!!!!

    Thank you
    Megan King

  • Megan King

I think it would be a nice change for it to be a woman villain such as Meryl Streep or Kathy Bates. If not possible male actors could be Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade), Jack Nickelson, or Dennis Hopper. Cannot wait to see it!

  • Luz Ball

There can be Only ONE…Adrian Paul

  • Janhvi Patel

  • Abhilasha Singh

The dead “Julia” is actually one of Davien’s incompetent personnel (Bahar Soomekh) wearing a mask. She is Davien’s translator in the movie.

I would like to see Scottish actor Dougray Scott as the young villain in Mission:Impossible – IV.

  • Elizabeth

Adrian Paul would be great!! He is a fantastic actor. Please choose him.

  • Lilibeth Kato

  • Trent Pruitt

I think you should get John Malkovich to play the M:I:IV villian! He would fit so perfectly as a villian in spy movie!

  • Chris Watkins

The answer to the question is Zhen, Maggie Q, I Hope.

  • rafael sanchez mejias

the real woman is Keri Russell, an IMF agent who once apprenticed with Ethan Hunt

  • Phil Morton

Man, Philip Seymour Hoffman was as good a bad guy as I think I will ever see played. He was pure simmering, seething malevolence. He truly was awesome! A couple of guys I would love to see take on the bad guy role for number 4 would be Bob Hoskins or Ben Kingsley. Anyone who has seen Kingsley in ‘Sexy Beast,’ would know and it was Hoskins in a Jet Li movie who really surprised me with his bad guy portrayal. I’d never seen him like that before. He was nasty! Ray Winstone is a top baddie as well.

  • http://bthroughz.com Rick Fukai

    Hi,
Answer to the MI: III trivia question : Davian’s Translator.

I think James Franco could portray a great villain for Ethan Hunt in MI: IV.
