The relationship between Redford and Newman's characters was really something interesting. Even though they were criminals there was still this affinity between the two of them that 'fueled' the story and made it fascinating to watch. Newman actually described the film as a love story between the two characters, even though there was a female love interest as well. And it was 'true brotherly love' I feel that he was describing which after all is something we all witness en mass whenever a tragedy or catastrophe occurs like Haiti or 9/11, etc. Man's humanity toward man is what we witness in situations such as these.
